History of Volcanoes National Park
The park was first gazetted in 1925 mainly to protect the gorillas from wild poachers, Volcanoes National Park became the first and oldest National park to be formed in Africa. The boarders of the park where extended further in to Belgian congo and Rwanda by the colonial masters. The park later became the base for Dian Fossey and American nationalist to carry out research about the gorillas, the later Rwanda Civil War affected the park and the research center was abandoned and closed with all the activities stopping, the park became a battle field.
